Which are the top universities for PhD in Chemistry in India? How much stipend do PhD students get in India?

In 2022, which are the top universities for PhD in Chemistry in India? At this stage, I hope you are already thinking about doing research in Chemistry and you have done your M.Sc./M.Phil./M.Tech./Integrated MSc. or in the final year of those programmes. In addition, you have qualified CSIR-UGC NET or GATE (only for admission in IITs) or possess JEST or INSPIRE kind of fellowships.  Below are the top institutions which you should prefer for doing PhD in Chemistry in India - (*This list is a preference order of mine - someone may have a different opinion) - 1. IISc Bangalore 2. TIFR 3. IISER Mohali     IISER Pune 4. IIT Kanpur     NCL Pune 5. IIT Madras     JNCASR     CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow 6. IIT Guwahati 7. IIT Bombay     University of Hyderabad 8. Indian Institute of Cultivation of Science 9. Raman Research Institute     IIT (BHU) Varanasi     IIT (ISM) Dhanbad 10. IIT Kgp 11. IIT Roorkee 12. IIT Delhi 13. I...

What are the best demo teaching topics for Assistant Professor/ Lecturer Interview in Chemistry?

Whenever the college service commission (CSC) or public service commission (PSC) or any university or even coaching centre organizes interviews for the selection of Assistant Professors or Lecturers or even Subject Matter Expert in Chemistry for teaching university or govt-aided degree colleges or polytechnic colleges, the candidate is mandatorily asked to give a short teaching demo on a board. Students often become confused about which topics to choose from in the vast syllabus of Chemistry.  The next doubt comes whether I should prepare a topic from Organic, Inorganic or Physical Chemistry. The answer is it does not matter; you can choose any domain in which you are more confident, ultimately your demo teaching should not only be excellent, but also you should be able to answer any questions coming out of your demo teaching. The next doubt comes in how much time I would be getting to give my demo. Actually, it depends based on the situation. In most cases, you would be c...

What advice would you give to someone who is about to start a PhD program?

How to be a successful PhD student? How to start your doctoral research with practical tips and tricks? I may not be the right person to give you advice, but based on my experiences of doing a PhD from one of the IITs, I can give you a few suggestions -  1. Choose your PhD guide/supervisor properly. This is the single most important thing you MUST consider. See whether your potential guide is active in research, how many journal articles he is publishing in a year and what is the quality of them based on impact factors, are his publications repetitive? Does he give time to his PhD students? Does he give a new idea? Does he travel abroad for conferences and is he known in his field? What is his nature - too tough or friendly? Is he a womaniser and gives favours to girl students? In how many years his previous students get PhD? I know a professor who takes a minimum of 10 years to give a PhD and his students sometimes get to see 3 world cups!  Where are the alumni PhD students ...

How to respond to peer-reviewer comments for your research publication in an International Journal?

I will come straight to the point. I am assuming that at this point, you or your guide have received an email from the Editorial office of a respective journal in which you have submitted your manuscript and it has gone under a peer-review process. In that mail, typically, all the information would be there on what needs to be done along with the reviewers' comments. I will give here a few general instructions - 1. Prepare a point-by-point response to each of the queries/suggestions of all the reviewers. Copy the queries into a word file (preferably in Red color) and give reply to each of the queries by mentioning author reply (preferably in blue color). 2. Give in detail explanations - this will be make or break for your paper. Explain why you can't accept a suggestion and also mention, at which page and line number you have done the suggested corrections in your revised manuscript. 3. Also include the revised figure/table within the author reply. Highlight the corrections in ...

Should I upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 or perform a clean install?

CLEAN INSTALL. I always prefer a clean install because it clears out unnecessary crap from your PC and a clean installed OS would be much FASTER than an updated one. Don't keep any of your personal data files in c drive, make a bootable pen drive and install in c. None of your files would be affected in other drives even after a clean install. For any help regarding this, do comment.

Can I still use Windows 10 1809 in 2022?

Windows 10 - 1809 version has already reached end of support in 2019, which means Microsoft not only will stop your quality feature updates, but also your security updates.  That means it is quite dangerous to connect it to internet.  If you are using the PC offline or in a secured intranet environment, there is not much issue, you can continue using that. But I would recommend you to update to the latest version possible to be secured. To update, the best method is to use a bootable pendrive and update your PC and install your windows in c drive. Keep all your personal data files to other drives (e.g., d, e, f).  So that your data and files would be safe. Although you will lose your installed software, for that reason I never install any software in c drive.  I also make a folder in d or e drive and make a folder there and install there, so that they remain installed even after an update.  You will lose Microsoft office and some other ones which are by default ...

How to draw a scaled Potential Energy Surface (PES) for a peer-reviewed International journal research article?

A little background, one of my research articles was under peer-review in an international journal and revision was requested from the journal editor. One of the reviewers has not happy with my schematic potential energy surface (PES) for my theoretical calculations. The PES was between reactants and products via transition states. I had drawn the PES in PowerPoint, but it was not scaled; it was qualitative. Then I was looking for some good software to make potential energy surfaces. First I came across PESViewer ( rubenvdvijver/PESViewer: Depiction of Potential Energy Surfaces (github.com) ). It is a Python-based program in linux environment and does not have a GUI. You have to install Matplotlib and pip in Ubuntu to run this one. In the input.py file, you have to enter details of your wells, transition states, reactants and bimolecular products along with their barrier heights in kcal/mol. But with more research, I found an easier alternative called MechaSVG ( ricalmang/mechaSVG: P...

About me

Hii folks, I am Dr. KM , a PhD graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai.  In this blog, we will discuss my passion on 3C's i.e. Chemistry, Computers and Cricket and sometimes Career advice too, even in UPSC Civil Services preparation which I have little experience with.  Hope we will have a blast here!

Which optional subject is more scoring in UPSC?

Bro!! Come out of misconception. There is no such subject because good amount of understanding and writing skill is needed to score good in UPSC optional papers. I would suggest to look into the syllabus properly and choose among the subjects which you have read in your graduation. You can never become confident in a new subject which you have not studied before and questions in optional would come at the level of graduation 3rd year and post-graduation 1st year, so don't make this mistake.  My senior passed with 86 rank, his optional was Physics and one of my friend got 231 rank with Maths. in last year. So choose in which you are confident enough. Best of luck !!

What are the risks if I activate my Windows using command prompt coding available on a third party website/blog?

Controversial question! Risks are always there. There are risks of a virus/ malware infection like a trojan. If you are well informed, you can check the inherent code too to be sure. But mostly, there will be no harm. Go with the latest links available in youtube with good views and likes. BUT WHILE DOING THAT DON’T PUT YOUR FIREWALL OR ANTIVIRUS OFF. I would suggest getting a licensed version of Windows and then connecting it to your Microsoft account so that you don’t have to worry each time.

Is self preparation enough for UPSC?

What I feel, coaching is not at all necessary. I myself took coaching which I found absolutely waste of time, except few things. My friend, now everything is available online. They are of very good quality too. I would suggest you to regularly visit MRUNAL.org, INSIGHTS ON INDIA, IAS BABA, VISION IAS websites.  From these sites, you will also get to know what to read & what not to read. You will get to know which sources you have to follow. I think best is group study, then your burden would be much lesser. I always have 3–4 friends whom I can discuss anytime. So go ahead, you can do it!! best of luck…

What can I try to get my brain to shut up when I'm trying to sleep?

Try to write what you are planning to do tomorrow. Promising yourself looking at the mirror that tomorrow you will give your best no matter what happens, without expecting anything. Nothing is in our control, so relax. Taking a bath before you are going to sleep helps me a lot. Keeping laptop, smartphone etc away from bed. I think these above points can help you. IF NOTHING WORKS...................... Close your eyes on the bed, switch off all lights, start counting from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 and so on by ONLY FOCUSSING on that number.  Try it. Take care.

Is it true that Windows 10 hides an anti-ransomware feature? How is it activated?

YES. In Windows Security, Go to “Virus and Threat Protection”. Click on “Manage Ransomware protection” under Ransomware protection Enable “controlled folder access” Once you enable it, you can click “protected folders” and there you can select the desired folders and drives which you can never afford to lose at any cost. If any app wants to use any data from those drives and folders, it will be blocked and notification will be shown and you can manually allow it too. Or even you can allow a trusted app through the controlled folder access. P.S.: It is a pretty nice feature provided by defender. I use it regularly.

What are some factors to consider when choosing a PhD/postdoc advisor?

This is more important than even choosing your field. A good guide can push a mediocre student to become excellent, while a bad guide can do the opposite. While joining for PhD in a group, ask students in the department and also from that group about the guide. Check if he regularly publishes in internationally peer-reviewed reputed journals. What are his graduate students doing after PhD? How much long he is taking for awarding the PhD to a student? All these factors are very very important. An excellent guide can help you to reach such heights via sheer motivation and encouragement, which you can never ever realise. Good luck. All these applies for a post doc guide also which in case is mostly sitting abroad and have very little access. So make an informed decision as much as possible.

What is considered a high publication PhD candidate?

It depends on fields on which a PhD student is working.  In the field of Maths., even one good paper is considered very highly, whereas in the field of Chemistry, lesser than 3–4 papers is not considered good enough. So it depends. Do some research, you will understand.  Take help of Google scholar, Web of Science, Scopus.  Go to the faculty websites, check their students’ publication throughout their PhD.  You will get better idea.

What is the simple way to free up space in Windows?

There are 2 ways, Turn on storage sense and go through its settings to delete the temporary files and this what everyone will tell you. The best way is to use a open source software named - “ WinDirStat ” - this shows on each drive which files are holding up how much space by color graphic.  If you don’t require those files you can double click and delete them. It won’t allow you to delete system files which anyhow you can’t delete - so no tension.  Many times many old uninstalled software were taking GBs of spaces, or my screen recording videos hidden - I could clean them up all and free up lots of spaces.

Which is the best PDF reader app for a Windows PC?

SUMATRA PDF. I have long searched for a PDF reader app which is fast and lightweight and use the least amount of resources.  This takes less than 20 MB of space and opens PDF in less than a second.  I can keep 100’s of PDF open and I may close the app while reading the 3rd page of 97th PDF and when I open the app the next day it will exactly open to that page of that particular PDF only and also will sideby open other 96 PDFs.  It can also open eBook (epub, mobi), comic book (cbz/cbr), DjVu, XPS, CHM, images too. It is fully customisable too using settings and one coded document. I personally use the pre-release version and this also gets regular weekly interesting updates.

How do I change the search settings in Windows 11? (or) How do I do an advanced search in Windows 11?

There are 2 ways - In Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Search > Permissions & History. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions. But if you take my opinion, don’t use windows search, it is awful.  Use Everything search by Voidtools. There also you can change all settings and they are pretty useful. If you go to its settings, you can activate much more beautiful options. You can search all PDF by *.PDF or by typing fraction of names. You can search any system files or any files within the PC.

Is Microsoft Edge still worth it in 2022?

IT IS THE BEST now. It has even beaten Chrome. Best in terms of CPU, memory usage, speed and security. It uses sleeping tabs to save resources. Its built-in tracking protection is almost equivalent to an Adblock.  All chromium extensions work here.  It has built-in windows defender SmartScreen.  You should try its collection feature, then you will become a fan of it. I love the immersive reading feature greatly.  Once you download a file, you don’t need to necessarily save it, you can directly open it, unlike chrome. You can open all office files and PDF's within your browser itself. I use it every day. I used to use BRAVE but it started to lag and consume lots of CPU. Then I got Edge.

Is it worth going into academia?

Always worth if you love doing research as well as teaching.  It depends on where your passion lies.  Although job opportunities are low, but it is worth opting for if you want to have your own laboratory alongside you enjoy teaching the students too.  You will have the freedom to do research as you like and guide many potential research scholars too. Work-life balance will be quite good in academia.  On the downside, it pays you lesser than in Industries, but that is what you have to find out where your interest lies.

Why is the Ultimate Performance Power Plan not a recommended power plan by Windows if it is so good at making systems run smoothly?

Can you work the whole day at your peak? Don’t you need rest? The same is for PCs. If the ultimate mode of power plan is ON, the PC will be working 100% at all the time and will become eventually heated more than 85–90 degrees.  With time, the components will get damaged and longevity will be reduced.  It will affect the microcomponents over time and even your battery.  This is why it is hidden in the power plans and you need to manually activate it. Use it only when you require to do huge calculations, simulations or some intensive games. Otherwise not.

How can one improve English for IAS exam?

Read ‘THE HINDU’ every day.  I think you know what this newspaper means for civil service aspirants :)  Practice answer writing too.  Listen to the discussion on AIR FM every day.  Give attention to the way speakers are expressing their thoughts on an issue.  That’s it.  Your English would be improved a great bit!

Which one is better for a PhD in chemistry: IIT, Kanpur or IISC, Bangalore?

It depends more on the guide and the field in which you want to work. I would suggest IISc would be a much better option. I think it is the best research institute in India. (even world rankings tell the same!) But there are cons, as it would be taking more than 5 years to complete your PhD in most of cases. But if you want a great campus life with vibrant cultures and activities and plus a tag of IIT in your CV, obviously go for IITK. It is doing quite excellent research at present.  There could also be a placement opportunity for you in IITK after your PhD which may not be possible in IISc. Atlast, I would suggest you to listen to your heart, look for the guide/supervisor of your PhD, rather than institution which actually does not matter at the end of the day. Your skills and achievements during PhD matters much more than that.  Do research for your potential supervisor in both the institutions, rather than the institutions itself. **N.B.- It is not appropriate to com...

Why carbonic acid is a weak acid?

Weak acids are those which doesn’t completely dissociate in solution. H 2 CO 3 = H (+) + HCO 3 (-) There always exist an equilibrium (here = sign) between LHS and RHS. So some of H(+) always combines with HCO3(-) to give the backward reaction. That’s why amount of free H(+) in the solution decreases. That’s it.

Does Windows 10 Pro include Office?

No. You can use the office online by logging in using a Microsoft account. In the future, MS may make W10 free and open source. It seems, they will make their business with Office products only. So, no chance anyhow that office will be free. If you are not comfortable with online office, install WPS office. It is 99% similar to MS office and supports all the MS office file formats like .docs, .pptx, .xlxs etc.

What does one actually do while doing a PhD?

Read literatures on certain areas of interest. It depends on the lab you have joined. Take courses required for PhD and pass them. Pass the Comprehensive examination. Define a problem after discussing it with peers and guide. Give a research proposal seminar. Start building the instruments or arrange the stuffs. Keep on doing trials. Failure comes. Try more. Read more. THIS REPEATS! Until one day success comes. Discussing with peers and guide about the findings. and if it becomes a significant contribution, the guide asks for preparing a manuscript. Manuscript (MS) writing continues along with searching for new problems. MS writing is completed and checked for errors by peers and guide. MS is submitted to a journal. Reviewer comments come with either major/minor corrections or rejection. Address those queries. Resubmit the MS. PAPER is ACCEPTED!! The happiest day in a scholar’s life!! If that is enough, he starts writing the thesis, otherwise focusses on the new work. Give the res...
