In 2022, which are the top universities for PhD in Chemistry in India?
At this stage, I hope you are already thinking about doing research in Chemistry and you have done your M.Sc./M.Phil./M.Tech./Integrated MSc. or in the final year of those programmes. In addition, you have qualified CSIR-UGC NET or GATE (only for admission in IITs) or possess JEST or INSPIRE kind of fellowships.

This list is based on their Chemistry department (or research field) and only based on information available to me at this point in time. Someone may have a different opinion than me. I welcome them. Please let me know in the comment box. In most of the above institutions, I have already given PhD interviews, and during interview days, I could learn many new things. BUT, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING - apply for all, attend interviews for as many as you can, but 1st and foremost thing is that you should not just see the institution and get admission - the most important thing is choosing a field of research and more than that, your potential PhD supervisor. Read this post in my blog (What advice would you give to someone who is about to start a PhD program? (chemistrycomputerscricket.blogspot.com) where I have explained in detail.
Now coming to the salary part. For the first 2 years as a junior research fellow (JRF), you will be getting a non-taxable stipend of Rs.31,000/- and if you are from CSIR fellowship, your stipend would be delayed in most scenarios, whereas if you are getting an institute fellowships or HTRA (Half Time Research Assistantship) fellowships, your stipend would be credited within the 1st day of the month. When you become a senior research fellow (SRF) after completion of 2 years, you will start getting Rs. 35,000/- per month. If you have CSIR/UGC/INSPIRE fellowship, you would have contingency which you can spend for buying chemicals, electronic items and others for lab and yourself too. You have to give 6 monthly progress report to institute and fellowship committees for a continuation of fellowship and no need to worry about these formalities if your guide approves them. And finally, if you are a PMRF, you would be getting nearly Rs. 75,000/- per month! So welcome to PhD.
